Art Ideas

Young Children (K-3 grade)

Splatter Paint – in the style of Jackson Pollack, splatter painting. Remember the Splatterflies and Volcanoes? Examples in Let’s Start Art.

Blow Paint Tree –blow paint or India ink with a straw to make organic tree. Can add "pussywillows" or "cherry blossoms" using fingers, etc.

Textured Board – doing different thick textures on a canvas or board in different patterns. Uses a stucco like medium. Paint in vibrant colors. Divide board in quarters doing each differently.

Collage/Paint/Cutout – using bright colors, kids paint textures, stripes, etc. Then with a template cut out animals or figures from painted papers and compose a painting. From Let’s Start Art book.

Resist – We could do standard crayon and watercolor.

Older Children (4-6 grade)

Texture Board – same idea as for younger children.

Water Color Technique Class – having the kids get comfortable with different techniques before they compose their painting.

Pop Art – From Paint It! Book – each child creates their own self-portrait in popart style. Maybe discuss current pop art.

Acrylic Class – having the kids work on shading, blending, texture and completing a canvas painting.

Resist – using wax or other medium, i.e. glue to resist paint on a canvas or silk?

Splatter Art – might be fun for them also. Just creating a canvas with splats of movement. Jackson Pollack.

Plexiglass Transfer – there was an interesting idea in Dick Blik using a transparent sheet. Kinda like plexiglass. They just painted right on it for a nice hanging. Good for windows.

Image transfer – would be a great idea but take two days.

Drawing for Younger Children (K-3 grade)

Picture/Landscape – extend a picture or landscape. They take a cutout from magazine and finish the picture. Good for perspective.

Charcoal Rub Drawing – they take pieces of cut out cardstock and lay their paper over it. Using charcoal they rub and move shape over and over until page is full.

Positive/Negative Space – draw simple outline picture, cut out and split picture in half using 2 colors only.

Animal – maybe an easy draw animal. We can use fun colors?

Grand Masters – Picasso Portraits, Matisse

Drawing for Older Children (4-6tgrade)

Point Perspective – extend a landscape same as above.

One-line Drawing – making a drawing without lifnt pencil. Combined with maybe a grid drawing lesson.

Positive/Negative/Charcoal – see above.

Grand Masters – Klimt – Collate it book and Pop Art – also listed under painting.

M.C. Escher Project – uses silver scratch board. It is called world within a world. Sounds neat, have to make sure we can get the supplies. It is 3 layers of scratch board stacked with foam to give the depth.

Collage for Younger Children (K-3 Grade)

Texture – kids do several textures with watercolor, then cut out shapes to create collage with their shapes. Similiar to painting project with animal cutouts.

Kimono Idea – having them paint different patters and cut out kimonos creating collage with kimonos and Japanese paper.

Moveable Figure – making a moveable figure with their own photograph and cut-outs from magazines. Held together with brads.

Koi – making a koi pond with paint textures and tissues.

Collage for Older Children (3 – 6th grade)

Textures – collage with their own painted textures onto a canvas.

Klimt – same as Grand Masters. The sillouette collage of the dog? We would need lots of pix!

Moveable Figure – same as above.

Koi – same as above.

Arts and Crafts or Mixed-Media Younger Children (K-3 grade)

Arts and Crafts or Mixed-Media Older Children (4-6 grade)

Printmaking for younger children (K-3 grade)

Monoprints – from plexiglass and kids painting on plexiglass and "lifting" the print onto paper.

Cut-Out Prints – soft linoleum or foam block printing

Clay for Younger Children (K-3 grade)

Plaster Relief – kids put items into clay (in small box) to impress their image. Gently remove. Pour in plaster to get relief. Kids might need to bring in some items.

Fossil Making – same idea

Air Dry Clay Masks
